These are my friends Jeff and Laura at Sarah's wedding.
So lollygagger may be leaving soon - this plog will continue though, in some form, at flickr
We were in Martha's Vineyard for my step-father's 60th birthday. This is Evan and Tibor. Something must be hapening to the right.
My first day in Nepal (~March 1994). We went to the Kathmandu stuppa - which you see from the plane on the way in. It's pretty big (and the plane isn't). People walk around the stuppa turning the prayer wheels (clockwise of course - always).
How could I leave Hanoi without this picture? Taken from a rickshaw.
Actually, they're probably chickens.
We are enroute to Sapa, the main tourist destination of the area. For both foreign and Vietnamese tourists. Sapa is fairly high up and picturesque, and features a strong Black Hmong presence owing to the nearby village whose subsistance is now based on the tourism - like many of the villages around here.
Once we got past the dogs these two were happy enough to pose for a picture - Though the grandmother insisted on changing first.
This is Toby at the edge of Oz looking out accross the river.
For a picture of Kyle working Dung Beetle.
Leslie has just completed scaling that boulder (called Stucco Wall). It was pretty high. That's Kyle in the foreground. We finally found Toby.
For a picture of Leslie working Super Sharp Shooter just to the left
This boulder was a bit flaky but we came up with a fun crimper problem. This is not it.
From left to right: Kyle, Paul, Leslie, Jim and Sarah.
At this point Toby was still lost.
For a picture of Paul on the same problem.
For a picture of Jim on the crimper problem.
So despite our misadventures, we managed to get a small bit of climbing in.
(Left to right: Jim, Omar, Emily, Paul)
Of course without me as navigator, we turned left leaving the Glenn instead of right. Maybe we were just giddy from the storm. Unfortunately the Niagara Parkway exit that you take to get the the Glenn is also the last exit before the Canada-US border. The prospect of crossing the border may also have made us giddy. So though some of us did not have appropriate ID we did manage to cross with promises that we were turning right around. This meant we also had to enter into Canada again. There were long line-ups both ways. Paul was more subdued, Emily was definintely the giddiest.
We ran for shelter under the eaves of the nearest provincial park random building and watched the storm. From foreground to back is Emily, Omar, Jim, and Paul.
Some friends from Kingston came up and we headed to Niagara Glen for some bouldering Sunday morning. Despite the threatening sky we thought we might get lucky and get some climbing in before the predicted afternoon thunderstorms.
I took exactly two pictures, including this one of Jim spotting Emily on a V-Easy warm up.
The lighting already looks dark, but just after this picture was taken clouds rolled in faster than you can say "gosh that was fast!" It was really something. The sky was a dark and a menacing green, the wind grew violent and the thunder we had heard in the distance was now closer and joined by lightning. The whole transformation took maybe ten seconds.
Given the weather we decided that getting to the top of the cliff via metal staircase might not be safe. So instead of walking up the staircase we ran up.
Steve Mann and Roel Vertegaal (my supervisor) chatting at the corner, powerless bar after the talk. The lamp is powered off of Steve's personal power source.
Samantha Abdallah and one of her prints. I will have to ask the name of this print also.
This is my friend Connor trying to scare you. Taken in Fort Lauderdale at the end of the SIGCHI conference.
Roel in the tunnel joining terminals B and C to the gigantic terminal A at the Detroit airport are very atmospheric and soothing. On the way out it was sorta trance-like abstract. On the way back it was mimicking a thunder storm (but in a soothing way).
These are some of the people I work with (Jeff, Connor, Roel). Really. This picture was taken after the first leg of our journey to CHI2003 in Fort Lauderdale. We woke up at 3am to drive to Ottawa, and here we are waiting for the plane - finding ways to amuse ourselves.
Artworks from the local graduating fine arts class were being auctioned.
Erin and Adina can be seen partially occluded in the foreground.
This is the RMC climbing wall. There was a competition there. It was fun - especially the francophone rap they played throughout the day. Except for the brief Eminem stint, then I was concerned for the burning ears of the 7 year olds - due to the uncensored lyrics.
That's Dan in the foreground.
